Inside City Center Las Vegas

Article by Darryl Ross

In the last 2 decades, the largest casino grand opening in Las Vegas was the Bellagio, Venetian, and Wynn. In different ways, all 3 casinos re-shaped the expectation of gaming, entertainment, dining, and luxury for the Las Vegas traveler. Now, MGM has redefined “Sin City” and all Las Vegas Hotels as it unveils the extraordinary and somewhat overwhelming heart of Las Vegas, City Center.

City Center resides on Las Vegas Boulevard between Monte Carlo and Bellagio. Known as a “city within a city”, the Aria, Mandarin Oriental, Vdara, Harmon Hotel, Veer Towers, and Crystals shopping district sits on 76 acres. The residential Veer Towers and non gaming Harmon Hotel are set to open in 2010.

Aria is a hotel and casino with a very modern décor boasting 4004 rooms, 16 restaurants, and 10 bars. Aria has a world class spa, 3 sparkling swimming pools with 50 poolside cabanas. Las Vegas Shows are still a huge tourist attraction to most casinos and the Aria is no exception. Cirque du Soleli provides entertainment for Aria with the production show “Viva Elvis” a tribute to the life and music of Elvis Presley. As of January 2010, performances of “Viva Elvis” are 7pm and 9:30pm Friday thru Tuesday. Shows will be dark Wednesday and Thursday.

Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas is a non-gaming 47 story hotel with sleek contemporary design and subtle oriental touches. The hotel has 392 guestrooms and 227 exclusive residences. Mandarin has 6 restaurants and bars featuring Twist by Pierre Gagnaire. The main lobby is on the 23rd floor where you can enjoy the spectacular views of the Sky Lobby.

Vdara is a non gaming smoke free all suite hotel. Featuring 1495 suites, a full service wellness spa, salon, and fitness center. VDARA is a Gold Certified Green Building.

Crystals is a retail and entertainment experience. A collection of the world’s most famous and elite retailers. More than 500,000 square feet of retail, entertainment, and restaurants. Featuring Wolfgang Puck and Eva Longoria Parker’s Beso Vegas.

One could argue that the architecture of City Center Las Vegas ranks with the best of Chicago, San Francisco, and New York. But its’ extravagant design comes with a whopping billion dollar price tag with Million going to the public Fine Art Collection featuring works by Maya Lin, Jenny Holzer and Henry Moore.

Regardless of the price tag, the City of Las Vegas is truly the biggest winner, City Center now employs approximately 12,000 staff making it the single largest hiring effort in the country today.

Best Gambling Destinations For 2008

Article by Nate Pachl

Every year millions of thrill seekers who love playing poker, betting on the ponies, or placing bets on the big games enjoy going out to new and exciting destinations for a few days of sun, cocktails and of course gambling. Whether you live in China or Las Vegas people love to let loose and throw a little money around in hopes of hitting something big. We’ve compiled a list of the best places to satisfy your need to sin in 2008, Michael Vick’s house didn’t make the cut.

7.) Nassau, Bahamas

Known more for its beautiful beaches and resorts than its casinos, Nassau is quickly becoming more than just a “fun-in-the-sun” destination. Situated on 7 acres of palm laced lagoons, The Atlantis offers 78 different games from Baccarat to (of course) Caribbean Stud. In addition, they host many high dollar tournaments across many gambling avenues, including a slot tourney that happens to take place on St. Patty’s day. Green beer and the Bahamas sounds like a winning combo in March.

6.) Atlantic City, New Jersey

This gambling Mecca, along with Vegas, are not the trendy gambling locations that a typical list like this would recommend going to for a unique experience. The fact is that Atlantic City has it all and is such a powerhouse on the gambling front that it can’t be ignored. From the Trump Taj Majal to Bally’s, you can’t turn around in Atlantic City without bumping into a green felt table or slot machine. After 12 hours of riding the drinking and gambling roller coaster, you can sober up by taking a stroll and soaking up an Atlantic sunset on the world famous boardwalk.

5.) Macau

Where the hell is Macau? Mississippi? Nevada? Hawaii? Getting warmer. Welcome to China, the land of Mao, Yao, and Macau. Let’s cut to the chase – this place is going to be bigger than Vegas, the Chinese Vegas on steroids if you will. In Macau, the “must see” is the Venetian Macao Hotel. Complete with state-of-the-art gaming amenities and its own arena, here you can lose a pretty penny and drown your sorrows front row at a Beyonce concert all in the same hotel. How is that for making a guy feel better after taking a bad beat! Macau’s gambling roots stretch back to the 1800′s but only today is it emerging as a major gaming destination.

4.) Louisville, Kentucky

More specifically Churchill Downs, on May 5th for the 133rd Kentucky Derby. Can you think of anything better that drinking mint juleps until you have a stomach ache (or a heavy buzz), while dropping gobs of money on animals just because they have clever names? I can’t. There is more to it than that; you’ve got the big hats and the tears being shed over during the singing of “My Old Kentucky Home.” The history and passion for this race run deep and the atmosphere at Churchill on that day is something that needs to be experienced by all, if not in 2008, sometime before your die.

3.) Las Vegas

Viva the Monte Carlo Brew Pub! Viva the guys on the street handing out advertisements! Viva .99 steak and eggs! Viva the fact that what happens in Vegas stays there! Viva drive thru weddings! Viva Elvis Impersonators! Viva bottles of Visine! Viva free drinks, penny slots, the World Series of Poker, airport gambling, and hotel swimming pools. Viva Las Vegas!

2.) Sun City, South Africa

Situated in the African prairie is Sun City. If gambling gets your blood pumping, Sun City takes it to another level by also offering safaris and world class golf. 10:00am – You win ,200 playing blackjack, 2:30pm you finally shoot a round under 100, 7:45pm – The Hummer you’re riding in stops suddenly so you can catch a glimpse of a lion pride. And then you think, what if they raced lions instead of horses at Churchill?

1.) Monte Carlo, Monaco

That’s right; we’re high rolling in 2008 James Bond style. Since the 1860′s the world’s most densely populated country has embraced gamblers with open arms. The world’s elite are drawn to the Casino de Monte Carlo to strike it rich(er). With its Ionic columns, royal garden, oceans of slot machines, and marble atrium the Casino de Monte Carlo is sure to make an impression on anyone who enters her doors.

That concludes the list, happy gaming in 2008 and GOOD LUCK!

Las Vegas – Cirque Du Soleil

Article by Roger Thompson

The astounding Cirque du Soleil is an enormous acrobatic act… and so much more. If you have an image of the old time circus with clowns and acrobats, be prepared for a shock. Cirque du Soleil has this, and much more, but in a form that is wildly different. With dozens of artists – tumblers, firebreathers, clowns and others – the show has many of the traditional entertainers. But the similarities end there. The difference is immediately visible the moment you see the entertainers. With carefully crafted makeup and costumes, it has to be seen to be appreciated. Deep blue or orange suits with tie-dyed designs, Chinese red capes and kaleidoscope makeup are only the beginning.

The performers are among the best acrobats in the world, gathered from more than a dozen countries. Displaying their talents inside huge arenas that seat over 1,600 they astound audience members with their skill. But that skill is in service of the most unusual, individual and innovative choreography around. Whether it’s the Aerial High Bar act making death-defying leaps that seem as if they truly can fly or the Alexis Brothers with their amazing tumbling the shows never let up for a moment. For 90 minutes at the Mystere Theatre audience is agog with wonder as they watch the show unfold. At the MGM the KA show dazzles the eye. The O performance is as wondrous as its title signifying ‘everything’.

Dancers of the Cirque du Soleil are one of the highlights. Combining traditional movements from their native countries with modern twists and turns that surprise at every step, the artists leave you something to remember for a long time afterward. But the show isn’t all just traditional high wire acts, comedy or dancers in new costumes. There is a theme to every show, one that weaves and tangles and then resolves like a complex detective story. You may have to attend several times to unravel all the mystery and awe that’s packed into the performance.

Performances can be crowded. Once a novelty, Cirque du Soleil has taken center stage in Las Vegas and became an important part of the whole ‘Vegas experience’. Like a lot of shows in Las Vegas, tickets are a bit high but a web search might yield a discount. Well worth the price, the Cirque du Soleil is an unforgettable theatrical experience. Don’t miss seeing it in the Desert City of Lights. Whether O, KA or Mystere, or any of the several other shows that are brought forth over the months and years, Cirque du Soleil will always leave you guessing what’s next.

The Magic Of Cirque Du Soleil

Article by Aydan Corkern

Boring old theater productions pack it in when Cirque du Soleil comes into town. This 20 year old theater production brings people from their homes in search of flights of fantasy. It shows in theaters all over the world and gets rave reviews in each one of them. Financially speaking, the show is not hurting. The show has aquired assets estimated to be worth about a billion dollars, and they sell over 450 million dollars in tickets each year. More than 40 million have attended the show at least once.

The extraordinary live experience the show provides is probably the best reason given for the massive following this live theater show has gained. There is no reason to sit at home when Cirque is in town. The performers work hard alongside the directors and backstage crew. All together, these people create an extraordinarily original show that leaves jaws on the floor.

It takes so much word to put a show like this together and even more to haul the show across the country. What is it that makes Cirque du Soleil so magical?

In 1984, some side show and street performers got together to create an all in one type of show. They combined fire eaters, men on stilts, jugglers, and magicians at first. Each year the show has picked up new performers and themes, but they have always put on one of the best theater shows around.

Today Cirque touts five touring shows and six shows that stay in just one city. Not satisfied yet, they plan to add even more to this impressive lineup.

While the shows have gotten more complex and sophisticated over the years, Cirque never roams far from its roots of street performance. The show is always focused on the talents of its human performers, and they do not wish to be compared to three ringed circuses with animal tricks. Cirque du Soleil organizers search the world over and bring together the best performers into a whole unit that travels together. Things you see at Cirque shows would have taken months of travel to small shows before they brought these talents together.

Alegria and Varekai are two of their touring shows, but they have stationary shows that never leave their city. “O” and “Love” in Las Vegas draw as many viewers as the traveling shows, and they feature all the same wonders. Each show has its own unique theme as well as a soundtrack built just for that show. These elements come together to make a very focused show because the costumes, music, acts, and talents are all focused on the theme and its music.

From Travelling Performers to Jesters of Entertainment: The Rise of the Cirque du Soleil

Article by VacationRentalPeople

What would say if a bunch of travelling street performers, the kind you’d seen performing around your local town centre, become the biggest entertainment troupe in the world today? Well that’s what happened with a couple of Quebecians…

Cirque du Soleil is a world famous entertainment company that by their own admission is a “dramatic mix of circus arts and street entertainment.” The company was founded by former street performers Guy Laliberté and Daniel Gauthier in 1984, in Baie-Saint-Paul – a small town near Quebec, Canada. Cirque du Soleil is French for “Circus of the sun” the production creates their own original music, special effects, costumes and unlike other various circus’s don’t have any animal acts in their performances.

The company began as a group of street performers mainly stilt walkers named Les Échassiers de Baie-Saint-Paul this was in the early 1980s. The performers would exchange ideas and find ways to develop new and exciting productions. They initially had financial hardship but was helped out when they got a government grant. For the first year of establishment they were a success which lead to them getting another grant the following year.

The shows are said to be various takes on different circus styles from all over the world, but each show has it own distinct theme and setting. The performances draw the audience in with performers and music rather than stage hands, this way it makes the audience feel like they are a part of the show.

In 1990 Nouvelle Experience became Cirque du Soleil’s most popular show at that point, it was so popular that its tour was extended and finished in 1993 (the official tour was only meant to last 19 months). For one of those years it was performed at the Mirage Resort and Hotel in Las Vegas. Over 1.3 million people saw the production during its three year run and thanks to this production Cirque become profitable again and were able to prepare a new show.

This was the beginning of the rapid expansion that Cirque went through over the next two decades. They went from doing one show to regularly performing 19 shows in over 271 cities on most continents. There are around 4,000 people who are employed by Cirque.

One of the key Cirque shows is in Florida it is La Nouba and is located in Disneyland. La Nouba is derived form a French phrase faire La Nouba that means “to party” or “to live it up”. It’s 70 or so performers hail from 10 different countries such as Russia, China, Canada, Brazil and Poland. The location of La Nouba is on the west side of Downtown Disney in a giant white tent in between The House of Blues and Disney Quest.

The show was specially made for the location. The theme of La Nouba is that La Nouba is an urban world where dreams and reality collide. The music of the show is a blend of Jazz, Hip – hop, Klezmer and opera. The musics goal is to captivate the audience and give them a sense of mystery, exhilaration and sorrow. The show has been running for over 10 years and it doesn’t look like it is going to end any time soon. It is a big hit with locals and tourists who come from countries all over but not only for the show. Especially as Disney is one of the most sought after places to visit. Many go as they feel it is part of a great vacation in which they are destined to go to. Some just go by as they pass through the state of Florida.

Other Cirque shows are touring all over America. These are shows such as Algeria and Kooza so if you are really into it you could make a trip of following the shows around.

Cirque are one of the biggest entertainment companies in the world, their shows are always highly rated – especially the one in Disneyland. When visiting Disneyland, or a show elsewhere, a private vacation rental can make a great alternative to staying at a hotel.

Cirque du Soleil was conceived in Quebec, Canada by two former street performers in the early eighties. A successful formula, Cirque founders have gone on to produce nearly twenty different Cirque shows with performances in over 250 cities worldwide.

Cirque co-founder, Guy Laliberte is quoted as saying, “Our approach was very simple. It was about creating a universal language… Inside every adult there’s still a child that lingers. We’re happiness merchants – giving people the opportunity to dream like children.”

Viva Las Vegas highlights

Article by Andrew Regan

A holiday to Las Vegas is like no other on Earth. It can be mesmerising, alluring and exhilarating to some and repulsive and too fake for others. Whatever your experience of Sin City it’s one you won’t forget. No other place in the world has more than 120,000 hotel rooms or a hotel like the Wynn Las Vegas which cost .7 billion to build. Las Vegas was built in the middle of the Nevada desert to attract the mega rich, so don’t expect to see this city on the cheap unless you are just on a sightseeing tour. You can find cheaper accommodation away from the strip, but to experience the real Las Vegas you’ll need to dust off the wallet and the hit the tables, shows and attractions.Vegas comes alive at the weekends and in the night, so plan your tip accordingly. Depending on the time of year you go the daytime can be an assault on the senses with searing desert heat and a glaring sun that can sap your energy if you are sightseeing. Take plenty of water as distances along the Strip can be very deceptive. At night time your senses take a different kind of hit as the city starts to glow. See Elvis clones in white jumpsuits, streets lined with sports cars and replicas of the Eiffel Tower and the Empire State Building as you wander around between casinos, attractions and shows. Vegas is famous for its mega hotels and they are worth a look or visit even if you aren’t staying at one. Travelling the Strip you’ll pass through ancient Egypt, New York, Polynesia, Venice and more. Head to Caesar’s Palace where you can ride the escalator, stroll down ancient Roman streets and throw a coin in the replica Trevi fountain. If you get tired of spending all your money on slot machines and blackjack tables or want to celebrate your luck in a poker tournament, take a break from the noise of ringing slots and enjoy a famous Vegas buffet dinner and show. Choose from a wide variety of performances, including old crooners singing songs of yesteryear, showgirls at Bally’s or a Vegas extravaganza like the famous Cirque du Soleil.Other highlights of USA holidays to Las Vegas include hiking in the Red Rock Canyon, which is just 30 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip and nestled within the Spring Mountains. Also, check out the Bellagio fountains that put on a show every 30 minutes. If you are feeling particularly romantic, how about a visit to the Graceland Wedding Chapel where you can tie the knot or renew your vows as an Elvis impersonator serenades you – a classic Las Vegas experience.
